University of Notre Dame men’s tennis rising junior Dougie Barnard (’15) has spent his summer doing mission work all around the world. His first trip was to St. Lucia, where he teamed with 15 others to organize soccer camps and to talk about the importance of their Catholic faith. His next trip was a nine-week research trip to Uganda where he looked into how participation in the Catholic Charismatic Renewal affects Ugandans’ commitment to social development. Dougie has offered to do photo blogs for both trips. Up first: St. Lucia.

On the first Sunday, which happened to be Pentecost, we attended Mass together at this beautiful church.

Our group of 17 (13 student-athletes and four missionaries, who are no longer students or athletes) stayed at the beautiful convent of the Sisters of the Sorrowful Mother in Vieux Fort.

After Mass we split up in pairs for home visits. My site partner and I went hiking with our host dad and found some incredible views.

Here I am with my host family. Both mom and dad are farmers – our lunch was fresh from the garden.

This is the first school our group visited in Soufriere. Here we ran clinics with them on the paved basketball court and even learned how to play cricket.

Here are the guys on the trip on the grounds of the convent. Left to right: Justin (former soccer player and missionary leader), Brendan (lacrosse player at Jacksonville University), Sean (semi-professional footballer recently coming from a team in London), Vic Falcon (had to put in his full name; soccer player at St. Thomas Aquinas University in Texas), Lucas (track and field athlete at the University of Nebraska), Matt (missionary leader) and myself.

One day we had the opportunity through Fr. Gerry to go whale watching. Here we stopped in to a private beach to swim – which happens to claim the most expensive hotel on the island
