July 15, 2013 – Things I Found Interesting (And So Should You)

Jul 15, 2013, 10:38 AM EDT

Troy Niklas Giving Bowling His Best Shot (Mike Hartman, South Bend Tribune)

We are in the humdrum of summer as none of the four major sports leagues are in session with the all-star break upon us in Major League Baseball, but I remind you … NBA SUMMER LEAGUE IS STILL HERE!!! The Las Vegas Summer League started last friday and a trio of Notre Dame players are partaking in the event; Luke Harangody (Denver Nuggets), Jack Cooley (Memphis Grizzlies) and Chris Quinn (Cleveland Cavaliers). In one of the best Summer League performances from a Notre Dame player, last night Cooley dropped 20 points and snagged 9 rebounds for the Grizzlies.

In some golf news, Notre Dame men’s golf grads Max Scodro ’12 and Mark Baldwin ’06 both participated in the PGA TOUR – Canada event this past weekend in Fort McMurray, Alberta, both missing the cut.

Football season is just around the corner, and fall practice is even closer than that, so a trivia question was bestowed upon you about the pigskin. Friday’s trivia question, What is the only current FBS school that Notre Dame has played 10 times or more and is undefeated against them? The answer: Illinois.

Now, what did we miss…

  1. 1. Football – Bowling For Sam  (LINK-South Bend Tribune / LINK-WNDU.com)
The first Uplifting Athletes event put on by the University of Notre Dame was held yesterday at Strikes and Spares in Mishawaka, Ind. The event helped raise over $2,000 for the fight against osteosarcoma and to raise awareness for the cause that has been put upon Sam Grewe, the 15-year old that the Irish football team adopted. I caught up with Joe Schmidt, Irish linebacker and organizer of the event last week, you can find that story here. Lastly, Football Media Relation Director Michael Bertsch documented the day through a series of tweets you can see here:

  2. 2. Women’s Basketball – Skylar Shines In WNBA Spotlight (LINK-WNBA.com)
After a trophy-laden stint at the University of Notre Dame, Skylar Diggins recently began her professional basketball career with the Tulsa Shock. Drafted third overall by the Shock, Diggins hasn’t disappointed even with some obvious growing pains, scoring 8.6 points, dropping 4.8 assists and pulling down 2.3 rebounds in 16 games so far in her early career. The above linked story speaks of Diggins’ transformation as a player from College to the WNBA.

    1. 3. Football – Getting To Know Chris Brown (The Football Player) (LINK-UHND.com)
Notre Dame wideout Chris Brown had one of the biggest catches of last season, a 50-yard catch in Norman, Okla., against the Sooners. So what can we expect this season from Brown? The UHND.com crew thinks the sky is the limit for this 6’2″ speedster. Click the link above to get UHND.com’s take on Brown.

    1. 4. Tennis – Notre Dame Tennis In The ACC (LINK-UND.com)
After combining to win 22 BIG EAST Conference Championships since joining the league prior to the 1996 season, Notre Dame’s men’s and women’s tennis teams are joining a highly-competitive Atlantic Coast Conference that has secured three NCAA Championships (two women’s, one men’s) since 2007. What stands in their way and how will the tennis squads adapt to a higher level of play in the ACC? The 2013-14 season will be a memorable one for the teams on and off the court.

          1. 5. Football – Oklahoma Players To Watch (LINK-ESPN.com)
Matt Fortuna is ready for football action to start this year as he is rolling through his ‘Players To Watch’ feature on each Notre Dame opponent for next season. One of the most identifiable teams the Irish will face this season is Oklahoma, and that is Fortuna’s most recent blog post. Click the link above to see who you need to keep an ‘eye’ out for during the Oklahoma game.

If you have more time to kill at work, read this other great article:

Notre Dame Running Backs Position Battle (ESPN.com) – There was excitement in the air in New Jersey yesterday as Coach Kelly joined a group of excited youngsters for a day full of football.

10 Freshman Set To Join Women’s Lacrosse Squad (UND.com) – With the ACC expanding to 15 teams, that means more work is put on the conference office. What does that mean for the headquarters of one of the nations best conferences?

Tweets That Made Me Chuckle …

Good to hear that they are more athletic than an insect from the lepidoptera order…

I wonder how long it took Pat to come to his senses…

Notre Dame Video Of The Day

One of the best written, most thought provoking shows on television began its second season last night, HBO’s The Newsroom. Here is one of my favorite scenes from last season … yes it is Notre Dame related.

Today’s Trivia:

It is the MLB All-Star break, so I thought some Notre Dame baseball trivia was needed…

Former Notre Dame pitcher John Axford has not allowed an earned run in his last five appearances with the Milwaukee Brewers, but what major surgery did he undergo during his time at Notre Dame?

You will find the answer in Tuesday’s ‘Things I Found Interesting (And So Should You)’
