Play (Fall) Ball

Sep 28, 2013, 3:24 PM EDT

The Notre Dame Fighting Irish baseball squad during 2013 BIG EAST Baseball Championships last spring.

On September 27–the most perfect South Bend fall afternoon you could imagine–the Notre Dame baseball team is hard at work. There’s practice as usual, but then at 5 p.m., the team pulls in the equipment to start a four-inning inter-squad game.

Director of operations Tad Skelley explains that this is commonplace for the Irish in the fall. The number of innings in the scrimmage depends on how many pitchers need to throw that day. Yesterday was one of the lightest days so far this fall, but tomorrow (September 29) at 10 a.m., Notre Dame will have an inter-team face-off that will last 11 innings.

If you want to get an early look at the 2013-14 Irish baseball team, come out tomorrow to Frank Eck Stadium. You’ll see a variety of pitchers and enjoy the beautiful fall weather while it lasts.
