And The Notre Dame Academy Award Goes To …

As the Academy Awards came and passed last Sunday, I figured we should hand out our own awards for the past year using the categories used to hand out the Oscars.

Feel free to comment below or to my twitter account (@NDSportsBlogger) with your thoughts about these pseudo-award winners. I chose the nominees and you can choose the winner. All Notre Dame student-athletes and coaches were eligible for this once in a lifetime award.

The award for best Directing goes to the Irish head coach that showed the best results and direction over the last year.

Muffett McGraw – Women’s Basketball

–        2013 Consensus National Coach of the Year

–        2013 Conference Coach of the Year

–        Led squad to third-straight Final Four in 2013

–        Led team to undefeated regular season in 2014

Deanna Gumpf – Softball

–        Irish softball program’s all-time winningest coach

–        Led team to NCAA Regionals in every year at ND

–        Named BIG EAST Coaching Staff of the Year in 2013

–        Team is currently 15-3 in 2014 after winning Citrus Classic

Bobby Clark – Men’s Soccer

–        NCAA Men’s Soccer Coach of the Year

–        Led the Irish to 2013 NCAA Championship

Randy Waldrum – Women’s Soccer

–        Two-time NCAA Champion as Irish head coach

–        Guided Irish to eight Women’s College Cup appearances

–        Led Irish to NCAA Regional semifinals in 2013

Tim Welsh – Men’s Swimming

–        Led Irish to six BIG EAST titles since 2005

–        Will retire after this year’s NCAA Championships

Martin Stone – Rowing

–        Helped lead Irish to ten-consecutive BIG EAST Championships

–        His team’s have been selected to the NCAA Championships on multiple occasions

Actor in a leading role

The award for Actor in a Leading Role goes to the top male player or leader on a given Fighting Irish squad.

Grant Van De Casteele – Men’s Soccer

Eric Atkins – Men’s Basketball

Steven Summerhays – Hockey

Zach Martin – Football

Chris Giesting – Track & Field

Team Award

This award is presented to the top team from Notre Dame over the past year through teamwork, community outreach and overall atmosphere.

The nominees for the Team Award are …


Men’s Soccer – The 2013 NCAA Champions

Women’s Basketball – Completed an undefeated regular season and outright ACC Championship in their first season in the league

Rowing – Captured their 10th-straight BIG EAST title en route to an appearance in the NCAA Championships

Hockey – Took home the final CCHA Mason Cup in 2013 and is currently ranked in the top 15 in the national rankings in 2014
